Flanked by mountains on the one side and sea on the other, Noumea moves to the beat of its drum. An eclectic mix of communities thrive side by side in what looks and feels like a little piece of France in the Pacific. Streets criss-cross the city, shaped by the landscape; parks, gardens and public squares provide refreshing stops for passers by, while the light breeze from the trade winds constantly wafts up and down the coves and bays of the peninsula. Nouméa is full of surprises – a bustling, diverse city where people can relax and enjoy life.
To the North of Noumea, along the West Coast are vast plains for livestock farming. This is where you will meet the Broussards: "cowboys" of the Pacific, with their pioneering spirit and colourful personality. The region is also home to fabulous beaches and, in the far north, a string of islands, whose waters team with fish. Wetter and steeper, the East Coast has a fertile soil with lush vegetation, green valleys and stunning waterfalls.
Ile des Pins
When Captain Cook discovered Isle of Pines in 1774 he was so struck by the beautiful vegetation that he named the island accordingly. Ile des Pins, 25 minutes by plane from Nouméa is truly one of the jewels of the South Pacific. A tranquil paradise of turquoise bays, white-sand beaches and tropical vegetation, Isle of Pines is also a haunting place where dark caves lie hidden in the forest and the bush invades the crumbling ruins of a convict prison. The Kuniés, as the island's inhabitants are known, have kept alive the tradition of sailing pirogues (outrigger canoes), and you'll see these ancient craft gliding elegantly across the calm lagoon.
